چکیده

Distraction and segment transport are wellaccepted treatment modalities for fracture management.1-27 Intermittent distraction creates an axial mechanical strain in the soft-tissue envelope and mesenchymal tissue, replacing the fracture hematoma. This study reports the origin and different rates of new bone formation induced in bone defects by distraction and segment transport. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was performed at the AO/ASIF Research Institute in Davos Platz, Switzerland, and was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Kanton Graubunden. Twenty adult female Swiss mountain sheep (average weight 62 kg) were included in this study, and were divided into two groups (A and B) of 10 animals each. They were operated under endotracheal anesthesia and strict sterile operating conditions. A modified four ringhybrid external fixation frame with calibrated vertical rods (8 15 cm) was mounted on the left tibial diaphysis (Figure 1). Each ring was mounted to bone by two 1.6-mm Kirschner wires (Synthes AG

New insights into the prevention and treatment strategies for hypertrophic scars and keloids

Hypertrophic scars and keloids are fibrosis abnormalities associated with the accumulation of collagen and extra cellular matrix components. These scars are caused by abnormal wound healing, which may occur after skin injuries caused by surgery, trauma, burns, etc. and may have a large impact on the patients’ quality of life. Hypertrophic scars and colloids in addition to aesthetic problems can...

Effects of pentoxifylline and alendronate on fracture healing in ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis in rats

Osteoporosis is determined by decreased bone strength that increases the threat of fractures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of pentoxifylline (PTX) and alendronate (ALN), on the stereological parameters, and gene expression in callus of fracture in an experimental rat model of ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis (OVX). The OVX was induced in 90 female rats. Fourteen weeks later...

Molecular signaling in bone fracture healing and distraction osteogenesis.

The process of fracture healing has been described in detail in many histological studies. Recent work has focused on the mechanisms by which growth and differentiation factors regulate the fracture healing process. Rapid progress in skeletal cellular and molecular biology has led to the identification of many signaling molecules associated with the formation of skeletal tissues, including memb...

The Locking MouseNail – a new implant for stable osteosynthesis in mice

INTRODUCTION: Fracture healing is a complex, well-orchestrated process, and animal models are essential to enhance our understanding of the mechanisms involved. Whereas in the past large animals like sheep and dogs were chosen for fracture healing studies, nowadays, smaller animals like mice and rats are used, especially to analyze the molecular aspects of fracture healing. Mouse models are che...
